Love of the Physical World: From Castellated Rocks to Wilderness

From colonial times on to the present day, North Americans have been asked by Europeans if North America is beautiful. When answering positively, they have frequently been asked: "But do you have any castles?"

The apparent lack of castles in North America was one of the reasons that Americans came to love wilderness.

They were then able to reply, "We may not have castles but we do have something that Europe lacks - wildness and wilderness."
