Natural History Science: Church and Cotopaxi

Church's most famous painting from South America was "Cotopaxi." Cotopaxi is a volcano that was erupting regularly during Church's trip. Here Church pits the volacano and the sun against each other as two titanic forces of nature.

People stood long hours in line to pay fifty cents to view Church's South American paintings for a few minutes in a darkened room lit with gas lights.
